Newport
Newport is a town chosen by many newcomers and military retirees because it is close to the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point. Once you hit the Newport city limits, you know this the small town life you have been looking for. Newport is a viable option for those who want to be close to but not live on the base. A large part of the town's residential area was originally developed as housing for civil service employees and military serving at nearby Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station.
During Newport's early history, the Newport River was navigable all the way to Old Topsail Inlet, now known as Beaufort Inlet, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean. The town was home to one of the earliest churches in Carteret County, North Carolina, the Newport River Primitive Baptist Church, established 1778. The community is also the site of many Civil War battlefields, forts, and strategic locations. Newport was occupied by Union forces for much of the Civil War.
The Newport town government operates as a council-manager form of government with a mayor, a town manager, and a five-member town council. Newport is a close-knit community with a population of about 3,350. It also has a volunteer fire department which also provides emergency medical and ambulance services.
Public schools in Newport include Newport Elementary School and Newport Middle School. The closest high school is West Carteret High in nearby Morehead City.
