Pine Knoll Shores
Pine Knoll Shores is a sweet little morsel tucked away between Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach on The Bogue Banks. It currently has a year round population of about 1700, and is considered a peaceful residential community designed to coexist with the maritime forest between the Oceanside dunes and Bogue Sound.
Rich in history, Pine Knoll shores has ties to our very own Theodore Roosevelt. In 1950 President Roosevelt's children took over as trustees of the property. Their main priorities included minimum disturbance of the island and its wildlife, which makes it one North Carolina's most ecologically responsive towns.
Pine Knoll Shores is also home to the North Carolina Aquarium. Recently reopening after a $25 million expansion, it has forty new exhibits displaying not only North Carolina's Aquatic life but also animals from the mountains to the west.
Animal feeding demonstrations and live animal presentations are all included with the admission. For the kids there will be all sorts of adventures, but they don't get to have all the fun! The adults can learn how to prepare local seafood and conserve important species, or create a masterpiece in the nature craft classes. You can always check out the calendar at ncaquariums.com for the schedule of the North Carolina Aquarium as well as those at Roanoke Island and Fort Fisher. The North Carolina Aquarium is five miles west of Atlantic Beach and is open year round 9am to 5pm except holidays (There is a small admission fee depending on age).
Other notable landmarks are the historic marker on Highway 58 leading to the North Carolina Aquarium which identifies the site as one of the first landings in the New World by the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. Also, don't forget the shipwreck Pevensy which is located off the shore where the Iron Steamer Pier once stood. The top of the shipwreck is sometimes visible at low tide.
