Salter Path
Right in the middle of Bogue Banks is the village of Salter Path. It is surrounded on the east and west by the town of Indian Beach. The name Salter Path came about in the 1800s when the men would carry barrels of salted fish from the sea to the sound by a rope around each barrel. They would get a long pole and put it through the rope and place the pole on their shoulders. Then they would carry the fish down a path that led from the ocean to the sound. They would then put the barrel of fish in their skiff and row it out to the boat from Hyde County which was anchored in deep water. There they would trade for sweet potatoes and corn. A permanent path was worn from the beach to the sound. It became Salter Path due to be closely located to a settler known as Riley Salter. A portion of this path can still be seen today.
Most residents are descendants of the families that originally settled the island.
Today the unincorporated and quickly growing town is known for its seafood which is always fresh from the boat.
